iMapMyRun 13kmI am currently working on a higher personal record (PR) runing 3 – 7km laps on the Springwater Trail in Aylmer, Ontario for a half marthon distance.

Last month I ran 2:53:16, a couple of weeks ago I ran a 2:27:17, and I am currently working on pacing myself to run a 2:15:00.

I ran 14.68km today and set my pace using 6:24 splits. Using iMapMyRun I was able to nail my pace fairly well by keeping my eye on the Average Page.

It started to rain around the 13km mark, which is good as I love to run in the rain, but with the rain came clouds and I lost GPS connection so I didn’t record anything past 13km.

I recorded the above times by taking screen shots on my iPhone. My average splits up to the 13km mark were 6:21 which is very close to my targeted 6:24. 6:24 splits would give me a half marathon in 2:15:00.

iMapMyRun Save ErrorI ran into a bug in pretty serious bug with the iMapMyRun app where it ends up showing my time as 2:33:07 for 14.68km even thought I had done 13km in 1:22:27.

After you press the STOP button for the activity you are recording you are asked to Save, Discard, or Resume the activity. When you select Save you are asked to select what the Workout Type is and then the app uploads your activity to the MapMyRun website.

For some reason I quite often get a Save Error (see screen to the right) where you are asked to Cancel or Retry. If you cancel thinking you can save it later the clock keeps on running even thought the Stop button has turned into a Start button and it appears the activity has been closed out.

This is the way I ended up with my time of 1:22:27 at the 13km mark growing to 2:33:07 at the 14.68km markwhere I thought I stopped the activity.

Here is my run as it shows on MapMyRun.

I tested this error a number of other times and even rebooted my iPhone to make sure it wasn’t just something wrong on my end. I was able to duplicate this bug every time I got the Save Error.

All I can say is the running apps available on the iPhone are poor quality. RunKeeper Free or Pro doesn’t even have Average Pace so it is hard to gauge where you are if you want to pace by splits. Worse yet it only updates the distance every 15 to 30 seconds so can’t get a time at the half way point to see where you are at the half way point of the split.

While on iMapMyRun it has Average Page but the Current Pace either doesn’t display or it is numbers make no sense at all. On my above run it displayed the following out to lunch numbers for Current Pace.

01.08km 02:07
02.03km -:–
03.01km 01:45
03.91km -:–
04:84km 04:07
05.96km 04:37
06.98km 04:23
08.00km -:–
08.96km -:–
10.00km 02:10
11.09km 05:28
12.02km 01:19
13.00km 24:39

So until RunKeeper updates their app to includes Average Page I will be using the iMapMyRun app. I have found the RK experience much better but for now I really need an app that gives me an Average Pace reading that I can run my splits by.
