To the right are some very interesting numbers as to what kind of increased traffic you get on the first page of Google when you move from one position to another.
While some people are happy to be in the top 5, the numbers to the right make it is quite clear that it’s when you get into the top 5 position that it become important to move up to the top.
Moving from 7th to 6th and 6th to 5th give you a 20% gain in traffic. Then from 5th to 4th you get a 25% gain. Then things really start to work exponential.
From 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd you get a large increase of 40%. Then look out! From 2nd to 1st please is a whomping 253% increase. Yes 2.5 more traffic when you go from 2nd to 1st position.
These kind of numbers and help you to know where you should be sending your link building dollars.
Currently I am promoting Canadian Web Directory, a new directory I have purchasing. Here is a list of my current rankings after doing white hat link building over a 3 week period.
Canada Internet Directory #2 63k
Canada Internet Directories #2 7
Canadian Internet Directory #2 81k
Canadian Internet Directories #2 39
Canada Web Directory #9 14k
Canada Web Directories #8 15
Canadian Web Directory #9 223k
Canadian Web Directories #10 25
Canadian Directory #19 1.4m
Canadian Directories #12 136k
Canada Directory #20 56k
Canada Directories #13 14k
In this the case of directories it is important it is important to get on the home page as customers are typically buying the top 10 web directories. So in my case where I am #1 or #3 for a position I am not going to see a lot more sales, just they will purchase from me first before the directories below me.
I plan on posting a series of SEO article on this directory so if you want to learn a bit about promoting a web directory keep an eye out for the following posts. Also if you have questions concerning website promotion feel free to ask questions in the comments.
Definition: SERP — Search Engine Results Page. When you do a search in any of the Search Engines the results that come up are called “the SERPs”.

White hat linking over just 3 wks for these results? congratulations! this is amazing. i guess you really have a huge network of sites (read from the expired domain post that you’d be acquiring another 200 domains) for linking and build authority. Amazing.
also, the stats are really motivating (or demotivating for those out of top 2 positions) to shoot for #1, and with a double listing, also for #2.
