The finish and color on solid wood furniture should be consistent. Run your hands over the surfaces and make sure they are smooth. Make sure the piece is solid when you move it or lift a corner up, there should be no looseness at all.
Check under the piece for staples or nails instead of screws, check to see that the joints have no gaps, and that there is no glue visible. These things spell out the differences between high quality and low quality made furniture.
