The following is an account by a burn care worker of her treatment of 2 year old child who had burns on the palms of both hands from a red-hot flat burner store. The burn caretaker is a Certified Master Herbalist and a practicing midwife with over 175 births. She treated the 2 year old child using cold Aloe-vera gel and burn paste made from wheat germ oil, honey, powdered comfrey, and Dr. Christopher’s BF&C Powder.
Both Hands Burned On A Red-Hot Flat Burner Stove
–by a Burn Care Worker
5pm and my phone rang again! This time a busy 2-year old climbed up by the stove just as his 8 year old sister pulled a kettle off a red-hot flat burner stove. You guessed it! Both hands laid flat on a burn that was on high.
I went flying over with a huge jar of 99% Aloe-vera gel that I keep in my fridge for this kind of emergencies. The mother was instructed to keep his hands immersed in cold water til I arrived!
The father beat me there by 5 minutes and he was holding the screaming child keeping his hands in cold water. I poured the cold aloe in a bowl and stuck his little hands into it. Hiccup, sob – and the child was still. It never ceases to amaze me at how cool Aloe-vera takes a lot of the pain away.
This is the 5th time that I have made a run like this and it has always worked! Aloe-vera used quickly begins to aid the healing process immediately. That is why the pain signals are quieted.
Over the next four or five hours we had to keep trading the gel for some that was cold. When we would let it warm up he would begin to fret, but the new, cold gel always brought relief. By 9pm he was getting sleepy and relaxed and by 10pm we wrapped his hands and he slept through the night.
We did not have the B&W salve or Burdock leaves since it was winter so I made up a burn paste that my herb mentor had taught us, using equal parts of wheat germ oil, honey, and powdered comfrey root and herb (BF&C Powder from Dr. Christopher’s). I mixed in a little slippery elm to make it stay together nicely.
We covered the entire burned area with vitamin E oil and then the burn paste and wrapped it up with gauze. We made it slippery and moist and put it on thickly. When wrapping little hands you need to wrap part way and then use a bit of cardboard to stabilize the fingers so that they do not curl. This is important so that you do not get growth restrictions in the new skin.
Every morning and evening they changed the bandages and sprayed the area with Vitamin C water to fight infection and aid healing. (Ascorbic acid powder – 1/2tsp to 4oz water.) Then they reapplied a new layer of the burn paste that we used in place of the B&W salve, and wrapped the burn again.
For the first few days he was not hungry, but that was OK. They simply gave him good fresh juices without added sugar and lots of water. A burned person must have lots of fluid to re-hydrate the body so that healing can take place. The freshly juiced fruits and veggies (carrot, apple orange) gave him the much needed plant enzymes to help with cellular rebuilding. So give lots of juices often.
His little hand healed without pain from there away even though we had deep 2nd degree and a fair amount of third in the middle of the hand. After the third day he was riding his little trike using his bandaged hands and he never seemed to skip a beat. The healing progressed nicely and by week 4 he was unwrapped and scar free.
The parents were amazed because this same child had climbed up and laid his hand on the glass front of their fireplace about a year before. He had gone to the hospital and they had treated him. That wound became infected and it healed with a scar. It was satisfying to realize that God made plants to aid in healing, if we know how to use them.
It was also extremely satisfying to the parents to treat him themselves and not have to pay the expensive hospital bills. They were very thankful that there was no pain when treated this way.
3rd degree burns over large areas take quite a bit of time to heal. Plan for at lest 6 – 8 weeks and perhaps longer if the health of the child is compromised in anyway. You will probably need help if you have third degree burns. That is what I am here for.
When re-bandaging the wound, never scrape off the old paste. Pat off what you can, and apply new. Usually with the Vitamin E oil liberally applied, the old comes off with the gauze, but if it does not, do not worry. If there would be pain after applying the bandage use leaf of plantain or burdock to take it away.
Here is what you do: Pick your leaves, dip them in boiling water to scald them and apply over the burn salve or paste. As strange as this may sound to you it works! I am somewhat of a skeptic so I often need to try what I have read to PROVE it.
One day I burned myself on my arm with hot oil when I was deep fat frying. So I experimented on me. I used the burn paste and bandaged my arm without the leaf. I waited 45 minutes and the pain was intense! Finally I went out to my yard and got fresh plantain leaf and applied it right over the paste. I did not even scald it. I re-wrapped the area. WOW! In 5 minutes my pain was gone.
About an hour later it was hurting again so I put a fresh leaf in place of the old one and the leaf did the trick again! I was convinced. It seems the burdock leaf is stronger and lasts longer so that is why John Keim recommends it.
So be prepared. That way you will not need to call me to come and help you. Keep a few things on hand for burns.
1. At least 2 quarts of cold Aloe-vera Gel 99% pure.
2. Dried leaves to use in the winter when Plantain and Burdock are not growing.
3. B&W Ointment or Complete Tissue Powdered (BF&C Powder) herb (most of this is in the B&W).
4. Honey and Wheat Germ Oil, I keep a quart of each on hand.
5. Gauze to wrap with
6. Adhesive tape
