In yesterdays morning devotions I was meditating on Phil 4:8 and 2Cor 10:3-5.

Phil 4:8: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

2Cor 10:3-5: For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

The mind is the battle ground of the soul. It is where temptations are introduced from the eyes, the flesh, and the devil. Paul in the above scripture called it a war, and truly it is. But it is not war in which we much loose or be over come. Paul tells us that our weapons is mighty through God and that by these weapons we are able to pull down strongholds, cast down imaginations and bring every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

One of our weapons is “the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God” (Eph 6:17. In Phil 4:8 (see above) we are given a list of things that are we to think on. As I was considering these I wrote out a list of what we are not to think on and I found it very helpful.

  • Things that are not true
  • Things that are dishonest
  • Things that are unjust
  • Things that are impure
  • Things that are not lovely
  • Things that are a bad report
  • Things that are unvirtuous
  • Things that are unworthy of praise

When I spend a bit of time thinking about the things we are not to think about I was surprised on how many things that were excluded. Consider these and see if you are surprised too.
